When Fear Takes Control Before You Have Time to Think

You may know that the situation is unlikely to harm you, yet your mind and body react as though the danger is immediate. BWRT® works with the automatic response that keeps the fear returning.

Phobias and Automatic Fears

A Fear Can Restrict Your Life Even When It Makes No Logical Sense

A phobia is more than disliking or feeling uncomfortable about something. The fear response can feel immediate, physical and difficult to control, leading you to avoid situations that other people appear to manage easily.

Flying

Fear may begin when booking a flight, travelling to the airport or imagining turbulence and being unable to leave.

Driving and Motorways

Driving alone, using motorways, crossing bridges or feeling unable to escape may trigger anxiety or panic.

Needles and Procedures

Blood tests, injections, medical equipment or procedures may produce intense fear, panic or a fainting response.

Dentists

The sounds, sensations, loss of control or memory of a previous experience may make dental treatment difficult to face.

Vomiting and Illness

Emetophobia can involve fear of vomiting, seeing someone else vomit or being unable to escape a situation involving illness.

Animals and Insects

Spiders, dogs, birds or other animals may trigger a rapid fear response even when there is little immediate danger.

Heights

Balconies, stairs, lifts, cliffs or tall buildings may produce dizziness, panic or fear of losing control.

Enclosed or Crowded Places

Lifts, public transport, tunnels, theatres or busy spaces may create a powerful need to escape.

Other Specific Fears

Phobias can develop around almost any object, situation, sensation or experience. Your fear does not have to fit a label.

Why Does the Fear Continue?

Your Automatic Response Is Faster Than Logic

The brain is designed to detect possible danger quickly. If it has learned to associate something with threat, the fear response can begin before you have time to assess whether the situation is actually dangerous.

This is why telling yourself to calm down may have little effect. Your conscious mind may understand that the fear is excessive, but another part of the response has already prepared you to fight, escape or freeze.

Avoidance brings immediate relief. However, repeatedly escaping or avoiding the situation can prevent the brain from learning that you are capable of responding differently.

A Different Approach

How BWRT® May Help With Phobias and Fears

BWRT® is a structured psychological process that focuses on the automatic response associated with the feared object, sensation or situation. The work is tailored to your specific experience rather than relying on a standard phobia script.

01

Identify the Fear Response

We clarify what triggers the fear, how your mind and body respond and how the pattern affects your life.

02

Work With the Automatic Pattern

BWRT® focuses on the rapid response that begins before conscious thought and reasoning have time to intervene.

03

Build a More Helpful Response

The process works towards the calmer and more controlled response you would prefer to experience in future situations.

What to Expect

Therapy Tailored to Your Particular Fear

We begin by discussing the fear, when it occurs and what you would like to be able to do differently. You do not need to prove that the fear is severe enough or force yourself into the feared situation during the consultation.

You remain fully conscious and in control throughout BWRT®. The process will be explained clearly before the therapeutic work begins.

  • A calm and confidential assessment
  • Clear goals based on what you want to change
  • No judgement about whether the fear seems logical
  • No requirement to disclose every detail of the past
  • Progress and next steps reviewed together

Is This Right for You?

Your Fear Will Be Considered Individually

Phobias differ in their causes, triggers and effects. A free consultation allows us to discuss your circumstances and whether BWRT® may be an appropriate option.

This May Be Relevant If:

  • The fear feels immediate or automatic
  • You avoid situations because of the fear
  • Anticipation causes significant anxiety
  • The fear affects travel, work, health or relationships
  • You understand the fear logically but still react
  • You want greater calm and choice in the situation

Additional Assessment May Be Needed If:

  • The fear forms part of a more complex condition
  • There are significant eating-related restrictions
  • You require diagnosis or medication advice
  • You are experiencing an immediate mental health crisis
  • Specialist psychiatric support may be more appropriate
  • The situation involves a genuine continuing danger

Important: Some fears, including emetophobia, medical fears and fears connected to eating, can overlap with other psychological or medical difficulties. Suitability must therefore be considered individually. Therapy does not replace appropriate medical or psychiatric care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Phobia Therapy FAQs

Is my fear severe enough for therapy?

The important question is how the fear affects you. If it restricts your choices, causes distress or prevents you from doing something important, it is reasonable to seek support.

Will I be forced to face the thing I fear?

You will not be unexpectedly confronted with the feared object or situation. The process and therapeutic plan will be explained and agreed with you, and you remain in control.

Do I need to know how the phobia started?

Not necessarily. Some people remember a particular experience, while others have no clear memory of when the fear began. Work can begin with the response you experience now.

Can BWRT® help with emetophobia?

BWRT® may be suitable for aspects of emetophobia, but a careful assessment is important. Emetophobia can sometimes overlap with restrictive eating, OCD, health anxiety or other difficulties that may require additional support.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the particular fear, how it developed and whether other anxiety patterns are involved. I will recommend an appropriate plan after discussing your circumstances rather than promising a fixed result within one session.

Can phobia sessions take place online?

Yes. Secure online sessions are available across the UK. Face-to-face appointments are also available in Guildford, Surrey.
