INTRODUCTION
Understanding Health Anxiety
Health anxiety can make ordinary bodily sensations feel like evidence that something is seriously wrong. A headache, twitch, pain or change in breathing may quickly trigger frightening thoughts about illness, even after you have received medical reassurance.
The fear often becomes a cycle of checking, researching symptoms and seeking reassurance. This may provide brief relief, but the uncertainty soon returns. Health anxiety commonly appears in three overlapping patterns.

01
Fear That Something Is Already Wrong
You may feel convinced that a physical sensation is a sign of serious illness. Medical appointments or reassuring test results might calm you temporarily, but another symptom or doubt soon restarts the anxiety.
02
Fear of Becoming Seriously Ill
Your mind may repeatedly predict cancer, neurological illness or another life-changing diagnosis. These imagined outcomes can feel so real that your body reacts as though the danger is already happening.
03
Constant Body Monitoring
You may repeatedly check your breathing, heartbeat, skin, swallowing, balance or other sensations. Because the body naturally changes throughout the day, constant monitoring will almost always find something new to worry about.
A DIFFERENT RESPONSE IS POSSIBLE
How BWRT® May Help with Health Anxiety
How BWRT® May Help with Health Anxiety
You may understand logically that anxiety is influencing your thoughts, yet still feel unable to stop the immediate fear. That is because health anxiety is not maintained by logic alone.
BWRT® is a structured psychological approach that focuses on the automatic response triggered by a distressing thought, image or physical sensation.
Rather than repeatedly debating whether a symptom means something serious, we work with what happens at the beginning of the anxiety response. The aim is to help you develop a calmer, more proportionate response to uncertainty.

A PERSONALISED APPROACH
What We May Work On Together
Health anxiety can be maintained by several connected thoughts, behaviours and past experiences. Your therapy will focus on the patterns affecting you personally, rather than following a rigid, one-size-fits-all process.
- Catastrophic interpretations of ordinary sensations
- Fear of receiving a serious diagnosis
- Repeated body checking or symptom research
- Reliance on reassurance from doctors or loved ones
- Avoidance of appointments, hospitals or health information
- Distressing memories involving illness or medical treatment
- Frightening thoughts about your future health

YOUR THERAPY JOURNEY
What Health Anxiety Therapy Involves
01
Understand Your Pattern
We explore your principal fears, physical triggers, checking behaviours and sources of reassurance. We may also consider whether illness, bereavement, medical treatment or another significant experience contributed to the anxiety.
02
Identify Your Goal
Together, we identify the situations causing the greatest distress and agree on a clear, realistic goal. This might involve responding more calmly to physical sensations, reducing compulsive checking or feeling less controlled by frightening predictions.
03
Work Towards a Calmer Response
Therapy focuses on changing the automatic response connected to your health fears. We review your progress as the work develops and decide together whether further sessions would be helpful.
EXPERIENCE YOU CAN TRUST
Why Work With Me for Health Anxiety?
I am an advanced BWRT® practitioner, clinical hypnotherapist and accredited supervisor based in Guildford, Surrey. I specialise in helping adults with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, phobias and established emotional responses.
My approach is structured, compassionate and practical. Although you will have space to explain what you are experiencing, therapy will not consist solely of repeatedly discussing the same fears. We will focus on identifying the patterns maintaining your health anxiety and helping you develop a calmer, more proportionate response.
I also volunteer as a therapist at the Fountain Centre, supporting people affected by cancer and medical treatment. This has strengthened my understanding of the crucial difference between helping someone manage health-related anxiety and dismissing a legitimate medical concern.
Appointments are available face-to-face in Guildford and online throughout the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is health anxiety the same as hypochondria?
“Hypochondria” is an outdated term that can feel dismissive. Health anxiety describes genuine distress involving persistent fears about having or developing a serious illness. The sensations and anxiety are real, even when medical investigations do not identify the condition being feared.
Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?
Yes. Anxiety can contribute to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, tingling, muscle tension, changes in breathing and a racing heart. However, you should not assume that every physical symptom is caused by anxiety. New, persistent or worsening symptoms should be medically assessed.
Will you tell me that my symptoms are imaginary?
No. Therapy is not about dismissing what you feel. We examine how you interpret and respond to symptoms after appropriate medical advice has been sought. I cannot diagnose a physical or mental health condition, and I will recommend speaking to a suitable healthcare professional when necessary.
Do I have to stop visiting my doctor?
No. The aim is responsible and proportionate use of healthcare, not avoiding it. We may explore whether repeated appointments or requests for reassurance are temporarily easing your fear while maintaining the longer-term anxiety.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on the severity and complexity of your anxiety, how long it has been present and whether other experiences need attention. We will discuss an appropriate plan following your initial consultation and review progress as therapy continues. Results cannot be guaranteed.
Can sessions take place online?
Yes. I offer secure online appointments as well as face-to-face sessions from my practice in Guildford. We can discuss which format would be most comfortable and practical during your consultation.
