Does This Feel Familiar?

Anxiety Can Affect Far More Than Your Thoughts

Anxiety and panic can influence how you feel, behave and make decisions. You may find yourself organising your life around preventing another anxious reaction.

Your Mind Will Not Switch Off

You anticipate problems, replay conversations or repeatedly imagine what could go wrong.

Your Body Reacts Suddenly

A racing heart, dizziness, breathlessness, shaking or a feeling of losing control may appear without warning.

You Avoid or Overprepare

You may avoid certain places, seek reassurance or carefully manage situations to reduce the possibility of anxiety.

You Fear the Next Panic Attack

Concern about another attack can become a source of anxiety in itself, restricting what feels safe or manageable.

You Appear Calm to Other People

You may continue working and meeting responsibilities while privately feeling overwhelmed or constantly on edge.

Logic Has Not Changed the Reaction

You know the fear may be out of proportion, but understanding it has not stopped the same response from returning.

Why Does It Keep Happening?

The Reaction Can Begin Before You Have Time to Think

Anxiety is not a failure of willpower. Your brain is designed to recognise possible danger and respond rapidly. Sometimes it learns to associate a situation, sensation or thought with threat, even when you are not in immediate danger.

This helps explain why reassurance and rational thinking may provide temporary relief without changing the underlying reaction. The automatic response may already have started before conscious thought has caught up.

Avoidance, checking and reassurance-seeking can feel protective in the moment. Over time, however, they can reinforce the belief that the situation could not have been managed without them.

A Different Approach

How BWRT® May Help With Anxiety and Panic

BWRT® is a structured psychological process that focuses on the automatic response connected to a trigger. The aim is to help your brain develop a calmer and more appropriate response.

01

Identify the Response

We clarify what happens, when it happens and what you would prefer to experience instead.

02

Work With the Pattern

BWRT® works with the automatic reaction rather than relying only on discussion, reassurance or positive thinking.

03

Develop a Different Response

The work is directed towards the calmer, more helpful way you would like to respond in future situations.

What to Expect

Calm, Structured and Personalised Sessions

Your first session begins by developing a clear understanding of what you are experiencing, how it affects your life and what you would like to change.

The work is tailored to you. You remain fully conscious and in control throughout, and you do not need to describe every painful or distressing experience in extensive detail.

  • Sessions are confidential and focused on your goals
  • You remain conscious and in control
  • There is no need to disclose every detail of the past
  • Sessions are available in Guildford or securely online
  • Your progress and next steps are reviewed together

Frequently Asked Questions

Anxiety and Panic Therapy FAQs

Can BWRT® help with panic attacks?

BWRT® may be suitable when panic involves a recurring automatic response to particular sensations, thoughts or situations. Suitability depends on your individual circumstances and is discussed during the initial consultation.

Do I need to know what caused my anxiety?

Not necessarily. Some people know when their anxiety began, while others do not. We can begin by exploring what happens now, what triggers the response and what you would like to change.

Will I have to relive distressing experiences?

You do not usually need to describe painful experiences in extensive detail. You remain conscious and in control, and the process is explained before the therapeutic work begins.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the nature, history and complexity of the problem. After discussing your needs, I will recommend an appropriate programme rather than promise a fixed result within a particular number of sessions.

Can sessions take place online?

Yes. Secure online sessions are available across the UK. Face-to-face appointments are also available in Guildford, Surrey.

Should I speak to my GP about panic symptoms?

If symptoms are new, severe, unexplained or could have a physical cause, seek medical advice. I do not diagnose medical conditions or advise you to change medication.
